But did you know that the legend of the horseshoe has roots in both Irish folklore and western cowboy culture? According to one story, in the 10th century, Saint Dunstan (a blacksmith at the time) was visited by the devil, who asked for a horseshoe for himself. Dunstan, being a clever blacksmith, used iron nails to secure a red hot horseshoe on the devil's hoof, causing him great pain. The devil begged for the shoe to be removed, and Dunstan agreed, as long as the devil promised to never enter a place where a horseshoe was hung above the door. Since then, people have believed that the horseshoe not only keeps evil out, but also brings in good luck. This belief is also rooted in the fact that being a blacksmith was considered a lucky trade, and iron was deemed magical due to its ability to withstand fire. Notice the seven nails on most horseshoes? In many cultures, seven is considered a lucky number. As the legend grew, people even began nailing horseshoes to witch's coffins, believing it would keep them from coming back to life. Today, you can still find horseshoes being hung above doors all over the world, with the "U" shape symbolizing good luck flowing in, and an upside-down horseshoe signifying luck flowing out.
